Spaulding Elementary School, a Title One and SC TAP
school is committed to helping each student develop career and life skills by
providing a safe, orderly, academically challenging learning environment with
appropriate academic support for the success of all students. The school
serves approximately 272 students in grades 3-5. Spaulding Elementary
received a 21st Century Community Learning Center grant of $577,500 over a
period of four years for the implementation of an afterschool program to
further support student achievement.
Teachers increased their capacity through on-going
applied professional development and also through advanced degrees, and
studies. This included Reading to Succeed coursework. Instruction was driven
by data analysis using Measures of Academic Progress Tests (MAP), CASE
benchmark tests, and classroom assessments.
Students were involved in service learning projects
such as Jump Rope for Heart, Pennies for Patients, Good Samaritan Food drive,
etc. Various school/community activities were hosted throughout the year to
promote an awareness and support of school goals and collaboration for
attaining the established goals. Through grant funding, the school
implemented the PAAWS (Pursuing Academic Achievement with STEAM) Learning
Center Afterschool program. Serving 100 students, the program provided
students with additional academic support as well as learning experiences in
the areas of science, technology, engineering, arts and math.
Parents and community members collaborated and
participated in a variety of events such as Family Reading Night, Father and
Daughter and Mother and Son Banquets, Grandparent’s Day, etc. Dedicated
teachers, parents, and community members will continue to strive to build leaders one mind at a time.
